I’m grateful for all types of worship songs, and love a good number of them. But sometimes I think singing someone else's worship song isn’t always the best outlet for the gratitude and wonder in a person’s heart. To think my only means for worship expression has to be a song is like asking me to strain an ocean out through my teeth. God is so much deeper than that, unending and delightful in variety. I think it’s fair to say that a drawing or an insect or a leaf can entrance you with thoughts and metaphors and joys that max the imagination and make you say, “Lord stop it! No, DON’T stop!” and, “I lost it. Oh, wait there it is again. God, it’s so brief but I’ll do anything to feel it again. A flash of Heaven though this sinner most often just sees through a glass darkly. So this is love, and fellowship, and intimacy with You. I love You.”
Guess what--that's worship! Let's stay keen to spot the ways we already worship God. I doubt we'll note them all, but at least maybe we won't feel overly guilty for falling short in our singing.
*So for example, this Homeland Housewares logo inspired worshipful thoughts on too many things to count or even try to keep up with. But here's my best attempt to at least list a few topics/feelings during the meditation: God's love for and service to the Bride of Christ, His people; God's creatorhood and complete ownership of everything; man's utter and utterly happy dependence on God; love between a man and a woman; childhood and childlikeness; wholeness; and much, much more "you-had-to-be-there" kind of stuff.
